Union Baptist – Harvey Johnson Head Start
A Head Start nationally recognized program for strategic planning and vision and a model for programs across the nation. -Gayle E. Headen, Director-

The Union Baptist Harvey Johnson Head Start serves 80% of its families from the Upton community of West Baltimore. The Center is accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education and has been in operation for 45 years serving over 7,000 families and the community. The current pastor of Union Baptist Church is Reverend Alvin C. Hathaway, Sr.
The Center currently serves 214 children. Children are taught skills in social/emotional, intellectual, physical and cognitive development. Ten percent of the children we serve have disabilities and are seen by a specialist in the field of the child’s disability. A Mental Health Consultant works with individual children as well as with parents, providing parenting classes and individual parenting services. Family Service Coordinators provide special services to individual parents and families as needed. Health and nutrition are very important systems that are taught and will serve families well for a lifetime with 75% of the children’s meals served in the Center.

MENTAL HEALTH
Mental Health is vital to the children, parents’ and staff’s wellbeing. Our child-focused mental health component includes screening, assessment, and referrals. The mental health component is inclusive of all our children, it is prevention oriented, and involves parents in the decision making process, while understanding the child’s behavior in the family context. Our Mental Health program also focuses on mental health services for the program as a whole; it includes staff and teacher training, supports staff wellness and classroom assistance. Mental health services also assist in improving classroom environments, smooth classroom activity transitions, and assist teachers and families with children’s challenging behaviors. It also helps to reduce stressors in the classroom and at home.
CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
Union Baptist Head Start supports families with children who have disabilities. We provide an inclusive and supportive environment in which a child with mild or severe challenges can learn. Union Baptist Head Start also has many community partnerships such as Baltimore City Public Schools and Maryland Therapy Network with whom we work closely to provide the best services possible to our children.
